My Work
I am interested in communicating the experience of being in a specific place at a particular moment in time. I paint or at least begin painting outdoors. The natural world powerfully invites us to key into our senses; touch, sight, sound and smell are at the forefront of our experience.
The primary question for me is how I may visually depict the totality of what is happening? My response is to alternate the use of representational and abstract techniques. It is this mixture, the complementary and contrasting aspects of these approaches that provides a fuller language in paint.
I work in northern New Mexico, where I find the beauty to be almost overwhelming. Often, I limit myself to painting more intimate sites, specific locations like an arroyo, our garden, or a composition that I see on my walk. There is something about keeping the scale smaller that allows me to better connect to this expansive place.
We all experience place and time in different ways. My paintings communicate my sense of what occurs. It is my hope the images resonate with others as well.
